The Astronomer Cassini designed a Meridian Line (219 feet long) installed in 1656 on the floor. A small 1 inch hole in the ceiling allows the sun light to fall on the meridian line at 12 noon each day, in a different place, which allowed Cassini to calculate precision astronomical parameters. You can tell that it wasn't noontime when we were there.
