It was built in 1850's in the Moorish Revival style. This synagogue is very different from other synagogues as it is the only one to have pipe organs and a cemetery, possibly because it was designed by a Roman Catholic architect. Its restoration in the 1990's was funded by Estee Lauder and Tony Curtis, both of Hungarian Jewish descent.
