This is from a 14th century drawing showing how, during the middle ages, sections of the stone pillars were removed to allow passage of wagons during a time it was used as a toll road. It is a testament to the Roman's engineering skill that it didn't collaspe. It was later repaired in 1746 with the addition of a wider roadway.
