This is Balbi's Arch which was built in 1678-79 when it was part of the Kingdom of Venice. It is on the location of one of the 3 original gates to the walled city. On the outside it has the Lion of St Mark along with the carved head of a Turk below it, I think as a warning. And on the inside there is a carved head of a Venetian.
